The Food Cycle
Richmond Public Schools: Science Lead Teacher Songbook 2003-2004
Tune: "The Candy Man"
What can make its own food
(echo)
By
taking in the light?
(echo)
Using CO2 and
water
Helps them make their food
for life.
The
producers do.
Yes, the producers
do.
All
these fit together
Each one having its own
part
To
make the world go round.
What eats only green leaves
(echo)
Growing in the sun?
(echo)
They eat up all the
plants
And
spit out all the ants.
The
herbivores do.
Yes, the herbivores
do.
All
these fit together .
Each one having its own
part
To
make the world go round.
What eats only animals
(echo)
Running free and wild?
(echo)
They eat up all the
meat
And
think it's such a treat!
The
carnivores do.
Yes, the carnivores
do.
All
these fit together
Each one having its own
part
To
make the world go round.
What eats plants and
animals? (echo)
Both of them will do.
(echo)
Doesn't matter which
They like them just as much
as you.
The
omnivores do.
Yes, the omnivores
do.
All
these fit together
Each one having its own
part
To
make the world go round.
What can feed on dead things
(echo)
Rot
decay, and wastes? (echo)
Lots of fun to look
at
But
not much fun to taste.
Decomposers
do.
Yes, the decomposers
do.
All
these fit together
Each one having its own
part
To make the world go round.
Sneaky Creatures
Loosely
based on tune from "Gilligan's Island"
Lyrics by Lauren Mayer
We're on the prowl and looking for clues
Animals hiding and trying to confuse
It's hard to find them whenever they use
The trick of
Camouflage
Blending in so they can't be seen
Changing their color from yellow to green
Hiding in grasses that work like a screen
They're quick at
Camouflage
Let's learn the features of sneaky creatures
Who make themselves hard to see
Nature's protection to avoid detection
By hiding their identity - But we know it's
Camouflage!
Stripes on a zebra are black and white
They make his body much harder to sight
To help escape a big predator's bite
That's right, it's
Camouflage
Chameleons; Spider crabs; Are hard to see
Tree frogs,Walking sticks, Where can they be?
Leopards;
Butterflies Hiding from me, - Sneaky
Camouflage!
We're on the prowl and looking for clues
Animals hiding and trying to confuse
It's hard to find them whenever they use
The trick of
Camouflage
CHORUS
No doubt, it's
Camouflage
Look out for Camouflage!
Animal Rap
by Heather Carter
Now
here's a little story that I've got to tell
about 5 fine creatures that
you know so well
So
listen to this rap. It can't be
outdone.
Its got fish, reptiles,
mammals, birds, amphibians
They all have adaptations
that help them survive
Defense, hunting, moving,
eating, staying alive.
It
might be a body part, covering, or behavior
Helping them to hide or eat
their neighbors.
Now
fish are creatures that live in H20
They've got gills to help
them breathe under water don't you know.
Now
a lion can't breathe under water it's true.
No
gills but lungs are what they breathe through.
Another cool creature's the
amphibian.
First it breathes through
gills. Then it breathes through
lungs.
Birds have beaks to help
them gather seeds.
Reptiles change their
temperature to meet their needs.
So many animals with neat
adaptations.
Don't you think it's time for a creation celebration.

Tune: The Old Woman Who Swallowed A Fly
There once was a
flower that grew on the plain.
Where the sun helped it grow, and so did the rain--
Links in a food chain.
There once was a bug who nibbled on
flowers,
Nibbled on flowers for hours and hours!
The bug ate the flower that grew on the plain,
Where the sun helped it grow, and so did the rain--
Links in a food chain.
There once was a bird who gobbled up
bugs,
And creepies and crawlies, and slimies and slugs.
The bird ate the bug, who nibbled on flowers,
Nibbled on flowers for hours and hours!
The bug ate the flower that grew on the plain,
Where the sun helped it grow, and so did the rain--
Links in
a food chain.
There once was a snake who often grabbed
birds,
And swallowed them whole, or so I have heard.
The snake ate the bird, who gobbled up bugs,
And creepies and crawlies, and slimies and slugs.
The bird ate the bug, who nibbled on flowers,
Nibbled on flowers for hours and hours!
The bug ate the flower that grew on the plain,
Where the sun helped it grow, and so did the rain--
Links in a food chain.
There once was a fox, and I'll make a
bet:
He'd eat anything he could possibly get.
The fox ate the snake, who often grabbed birds,
And swallowed them whole, or so I have heard.
The fox, he grew older and died one spring
day,
But he made the soil rich, when he rotted away.
A new flower grew where he died on the plain.
And the sun helped it grow, and so did the rain--
LINKS IN A FOOD CHAIN.
Food Chain
(From the awesome picture book Science Verse, by Jon Scieszka and Lane Smith)
I've been working in the food chain,
All the livelong day.
In the middle of the food chain,
I've got no time to play.
Can't you see the green plants growing?
That's energy, okay?
Consumer eats up the producer,
Predator eats prey.
Chorus:
Who's for lunch today?
Who's for lunch today?
Don't you just wonder, who's for lunch today?
Predator or prey.
Predator or prey.
Eat or be eaten, that's the only way.
